Valve Introduces New Game Recording System for Steam: Now in Beta
Valve has announced an exciting new feature for Steam, now available in beta which is a comprehensive game recording system. This feature enables users to record and share gameplay videos from any game on Steam, including those played on the Steam Deck. The recording system boasts basic video editing tools, making it a versatile addition for gamers who want to capture and share their gaming experiences.
The Game Recording feature offers two recording options, background recording and recording on demand. Background recording starts automatically when gameplay begins and continues until the storage is full, at which point it will overwrite the oldest videos. This ensures that players never miss a moment of their gameplay, as the system continuously records in the background. On the other hand, recording on demand allows users to manually start and stop recording whenever they choose, with each recording saved as a separate clip. This flexibility ensures that players can capture specific moments without worrying about storage.
One of the exclusive features of this system is the Steam Timeline, which appears during recording sessions. The timeline adds event markers for notable events such as achievements and screenshots, making it easy to navigate through recordings. Users can also add their markers for significant moments. Game developers can program their games to automatically add markers based on in-game events, further enhancing the utility of the timeline feature.
Editing and sharing recorded videos is streamlined through the new Recordings & Screenshots interface. This user-friendly interface allows for quick sharing with friends, requiring just one click. Additionally, the Steam Overlay has been updated to include a Replay mode, enabling players to revisit recent gameplay moments instantly. This feature works with any game that supports the Steam Overlay and is designed to have minimal impact on game performance, ensuring a smooth gaming experience.
To try out the Game Recording feature, users need to enable it via Steam’s Settings. By navigating to Interface, then Beta Participation, and selecting a Beta option, users can access the Game Recording settings. Here, they can choose between Background or On Demand recording modes.
Valve continues to develop more features, including individualized game settings, to further enhance the Game Recording system. This new feature not only enriches the gaming experience but also empowers players to share their favorite moments with ease.
