Sony has just shared a significant announcement for its PlayStation fans and owners. According to the announcement, the company is shutting down its PlayStation Store on older consoles. The list of old consoles includes the Sony PS3, PS Vita, and the PlayStation Portable (PSP). It also shared the exact shutdown dates for the stores on all three gaming consoles. According to the information available, the PlayStation Store on the PS3 and PS Vita will close on August 27, 2021. PSP users can access the purchase functions on the PlayStation Store till July 2. Besides, the company also released the next set of free PlayStation games as part of its Play at Home program. Sony PlayStation Store to close on older consoles; details
The entertainment giant stared the information about the “Store closure” on its “Important notices” page for PlayStation services. Sony also stated that users will be able to re-download and play previously purchased games after the closure. This access will extend to purchased media or videos as well along with the option to redeem games or PlayStation Plus vouchers. Players will be able to re-download and play the titles they have claimed as part of their PlayStation Plus subscription until the end of the subscription. However, this access will go away if they stop the subscription.
Taking a closer look, the company noted that players will not be able to purchase new video games or video content after the store closure. This also means that one will also not be able to make in-game purchases. In addition, PlayStation 3, PS Vita, and PSP owners will also not be able to redeem the funds in their PSN Wallets. However, the funds will remain in the wallet and players can use them through the web, PlayStation App for smartphones or the Store on PS4, or the latest PS5 consoles.
Next batch of free PlayStation games out as part of Play at Home program
Finally, the company also released several new PlayStation games as part of its Play at Home initiative. The list of these new titles includes Subnautica, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, ABZÛ, Enter the Gungeon, Rez Infinite, Moss, Thumper, and Paper Beast. As part of the list, Moss, Thumper, and Paper Beast require a PSVR headset to play. PS5 owners also need the PlayStation Camera adapter to use PSVR with the latest console. These new titles are available for claim till the end of April 22. Sony will share more PlayStation games for free in the coming weeks. Besides, PlayStation 5 and PS4 owners can still claim a free copy of Ratchet & Clank till March 31.
