Nintendo Switch: Next-gen hand-held may output 4K and feature a 7-inch OLED display
It looks like Nintendo will team up with Samsung for the OLED display on the next-generation Switch. Let’s check everything new we know about the next-gen version of the hand-held console, Nintendo Switch here.
A new report has just surfaced online with possible details about the next-gen Nintendo Switch. This report stated that the next version of the console will feature a 7-inch OLED display with a 720p resolution. In addition, the console will also come with the ability to output at 4K when hooked to an external display. It looks like Nintendo will team up with Samsung for the OLED display on the next-generation Switch. However, this display will be different than the OLED panel that comes on Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy devices. For context, the display panels on the smartphones are flexible while the panel on the upcoming Nintendo Switch will be rigid. Let’s check everything new we know about the next-gen Nintendo Switch here.
Next-gen hand-held gaming console, Nintendo Switch possible specs out
Talking about the rigid OLED panel that Samsung will likely craft for the upcoming Switch will help the customer. This is because the rigid nature will drive the price of the display panel lower when compared to flexible panels. The report stated that Samsung will likely start mass-producing the panels from “as early as June”. Source of this information, Bloomberg noted that the first set of OLED panels will likely reach the assemblers by July. 4K resolution output will be better for users who want to play on a large screen like their 4K TV. The current version of the Switch can only put out 1080p resolution signals making the experience a little dated.
Nintendo will definitely upgrade the internals on the next-gen Switch to ensure that it has enough power to deliver 4K. The current version of the hand-held gaming console features a 6.2-inch LCD panel with 1080p streaming. Switch Lite on the other hand features a 5.5-inch display so the next-gen Switch will likely be a significant bump-up. According to the report, Yoshio Tamura, the Co-Founder of DSCC, a display consultancy noted that OLED likely means less power consumption, higher contrast ratio, and likely faster response time.
The report also stated that the next-gen Nintendo Switch could feature slimmer bezels. It is possible that the company is looking at a Holiday 2021 launch for the Nintendo Switch Pro, the likely name for the successor. However, this report comes just weeks after Nintendo noted that it is not planning to launch a new version for the Switch “anytime soon”. Instead, the company is aiming to deliver newer experiences with the upcoming Switch. This also comes just weeks after the company shared several announcements regarding upcoming games at its Nintendo Direct showcase event.
