This comes about a year after the company initially expressed that it wants to create more smartphone games. Let’s check out the details about the direction that Activision Blizzard outlined here.
Game publisher Activision Blizzard has just reiterated some information about its strategy in the future. The company revealed that it plans to bring all its franchises to smartphones. This comes about a year after the company initially expressed that it wants to create more smartphone games. As part of the statement back in 2019, Activision stated that it was considering all its franchises for new smartphone games. The new report notes that the company will release a smartphone version of all its game franchises “over time”. Let’s check out the details about the direction that Activision Blizzard outlined here.
Activision Blizzard to bring its franchises to mobile, details
As per a report from GameSpot, Daniel Alegre, the Activision Blizzard president, and COO shared this information in a recent investor call. Activision Blizzard wants to push its franchises to an increased audience and the smartphone segment is an essential part. Alegre noted, “We need to make sure that we're enabling our franchises on the billions of mobile devices that are available right now. That's by far our biggest opportunity, and we're investing meaningfully to capitalize on this and to take all our franchises to mobile over time. That's really, really important for us.” He stated that the company has limited resources which means that Activision Blizzard will need to prioritize. As part of the prioritization, the company will focus where “the big opportunities” lie and currently it is the smartphone gaming segment.
This new strategy is likely due to the success that the company experience with Call of Duty: Mobile. As previously reported, the Battle Royale game crossed 300 million downloads in just one year. Beyond Call of Duty: Mobile, Activision Blizzard is also behind Candy Crush (and its maker King Digital). Looking at the date, the report highlighted that the company made about $661 million from all its smartphone games. These numbers reflect the revenue from July to September 2020 for the company.
Looking at corresponding numbers for the PC division, Activision Blizzard earned $514 million and $695 for consoles. This means that the smartphone segment accounted for about 34 percent of its total revenue. The report also noted that Activision is working on its next smartphone game, “Crash: On The run” along with “Diablo Immortal”. The first title is set to launch in 2021. The list of Activision Blizzard franchises includes Call of Duty, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Sekiro, Candy Crush, and Diablo. It also includes Tony Hawk, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Starcraft, and more.
